He again took on the duties of foreign secretary (1940-45 ) as part of a wartime coalition government under Churchill and again in the Conservative government that won election in 1951, holding the post until he became prime minister in April,1955. As foreign secretary, he negotiated with the Soviets for an 'interim peace' in Vietnam in 1954. He died in January 14, 1977 at the age of 79 years.
