The ruins stand with a solitary treem still bearing a nest, on a tiny island surrounded by swirling floodwaters that devastated Foulness, Essex, part of the floods that inundated hundreds of miles of the English countryside in 1953. In the early hours of the morning of February 1, 1953, strong winds and a swelling tide pushed the sea to dangerous levels. Flood defences were breached by huge waves and coastal towns in Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Kent were devastated as sea water rushed into the streets.
