Ziyang, died in a Beijing hospital, Jan 17th, 2005. He was 85. Zhao made premier in 1980 and the party's general secretary in 1987. He pushed economic reform and open foreign policy but was ousted in 1989 as he opposed oppression and sought dialogue with pro-democracy student demo in Tiananmen Square.
