Beschreibung:5576874 (9053) Jan 17, 2005; Beijing, CHINA; (FILE PHOTO, Sept. 10th 1980) Chinese leaders imposed a ban today on news reports about the death of ZHAO ZIYANG, the former Communist Party chief who opposed the 1989 crackdown on democracy protesters, suggesting that his official obituary would treat him as a pariah. Ziyang, died in a Beijing hospital, Jan 17th, 2005. He was 85. Zhao made premier in 1980 and the party's general secretary in 1987. He pushed economic reform and open foreign policy but was ousted in 1989 as he opposed oppression and sought dialogue with pro-democracy student demo in Tiananmen Square.
